Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal: Los Blancos drop two points at home

Carlo Ancelotti's side could not handle Villarreal in the first half of this one

It’s not been a great week for Barcelona but it could still be a good weekend.

The Catalans host Levante on Sunday after Atletico lost at Alaves and Real Madrid dropped two points at home against Villarreal.

The visitors were on top at the Santiago Bernabeu, without getting too close to Madrid’s goal in the opening half hour.

Villarreal eventually created a clear-cut chance when Yeremi Pino broke through and fed Paco Alcacer, but Thibaut Courtois batted away his strike.

The Belgian had also done well to deny Arnaut Danjuma in similar circumstances, with an effort heading towards the bottom right corner.

At the other end Geronimo Rulli kept Rodrygo at bay, but Madrid weren’t creating too many chances or holding their own in midfield.

Carlo Ancelotti took action at the break, bringing on Eduardo Camavinga for Rodrygo and moving Marco Asensio out to the right wing.

Danjuma was still causing problems for Madrid early in the second half too, and Courtois saved his low effort.

The game petered out to a goalless draw and Ancelotti admitted after it wasn’t Madrid’s best performance.
