The defender spoke to the press ahead of the game against Chelsea this week

Raphael Varane was the Real Madrid player chosen to speak to the media ahead of Tuesday's Champions League semifinal against Chelsea.

The French defender could not avoid questions about his future, with his contract expiring in 2022 and no new deal agreed yet.

Varane said his future is "clear" but didn't confirm he would stay at Madrid beyond the end of his deal.

Here's what Varane said:

Future: "My future is clear. I am focused on the end of the season. We're in an intense moment of the season and we have to be focused on what's in front of us and what's most important."

Demanding schedule: "We're not angry. We're in a moment when there are a lot of questions facing football. There are things to improve. In any situation, when there's a problem it's about looking for solutions in a united way. Everyone has their say and their importance. The calendar is an important question, it's a complicated issue. The best way to move forward positively is to talk and for the football world to be united."

Self-criticism: "It's a difficult season, it's been really demanding physically. But we have that strength in defence because we all work together. In attack, we have quality and we can always create danger. We have to look for solutions to create more goals. We have confidence in the players we have and in any game we can do damage. It's about everyone. Above all, in the final third we can be more direct. The best is to defend together."

Refereeing: "We are focused on what we can control. We have to focus on ourselves and look for the best way to win the game. That's what is important, we don't control anything else."
