PSG 1-0 Real Madrid: Mbappe to the rescue after Messi penalty miss

The French side have a slender lead to take into the second leg at the Bernabeu next month

Kylian Mbappe scored a stunning stoppage-time winner to give Paris Saint-Germain a 1-0 lead over Real Madrid in their Champions League last 16 tie on Tuesday.

PSG dominated the game in Paris but after Lionel Messi missed a penalty Madrid looked set to leave with a goalless draw.

However, Mbappe, who could still join Madrid for free this summer, struck in the final minute to give the French side a deserved win.

The two teams meet again in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu in March.

Madrid were handed a boost pre-game when Karim Benzema was passed fit to start, although he hardly saw the ball as his side ended the game without a shot on target.

For PSG, Messi and Mbappe started in attack with Neymar only fit enough for the bench after recovering from an injury.

PSG controlled the first half without really creating any clear cut chances, although they did after the break,

However, Thibaut Courtois was in fine form, keeping out a Mbappe effort and a Messi penalty.

Madrid duo Casemiro and Ferland Mendy picked up bookings which will rule them out of the second leg, but the worst was to come for Carlo Ancelotti's side with Mbappe's late winner.

The France forward didn't appear to pose a major threat when he picked up Neymar's back-heel on the left, but he jinked into the box, skipping in between Lucas Vazquez and Eder Militao, before finally beating Courtois.

Madrid hope he will be playing for them next season when his PSG contract expires in June, but first they will have to stop him in the Spanish capital next month.
