The centre-back was once again on target just when things were looking tricky for Los Blancos

Real Madrid came from behind against Napoli to win 3-1 and confirm their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

To the backdrop of an impressive atmosphere at San Paolo, the Italian side had the better of the first half.

Roared forward by a believing home crowd, they took the lead in the 24th minute through Dries Mertens.

There were chances to extend their lead, too, which would have taken them ahead in the tie, but they were twice denied by the woodwork.

They went in at half time with a 1-0 lead, meaning Madrid still led 3-2 on aggregate.

Aware that things had not gone to plan in the first half, Zinedine Zidane shuffled his pack and it had the desired affect.

Switching to a 4-4-2 formation, Madrid got a foothold in the game, although their first two goals both came from set plays.

The reliable Sergio Ramos -- in attack at least -- scored them both with headers, his second via a deflection.

That took the game out of Napoli’s hands and substitute Alvaro Morata added Madrid’s third in stoppage time, scoring inside the area after a Cristiano Ronaldo shot was parried.

Madrid went through 6-2 on aggregate but that was not as impressive as Bayern Munich’s score against Arsenal in the night's other tie.

Having won the first leg 5-1 in Germany they reproduced that scoreline in London on Tuesday to book their place in the last eight with a humongous 10-2 aggregate win.

Questions over Arsene Wenger’s future at the Emirates will persist.
