Metatarsal injury could see Madrid's Kroos miss the rest of the year

The German midfielder will miss December's Clasico and may not be out until 2017

Bad news for Real Madrid. The club revealed on Tuesday that midfielder Toni Kroos suffered a fracture-avulsion of the base of the fifth metatarsal in the right foot in the win over Leganes.

They have not revealed how long he will be out for, but it’s unlikely he will play again this year. At the very least, it’s almost impossible that he will be fit for the Clasico at Camp Nou on Dec. 3.

Early indications are that he will be out for between six weeks and three months, but it will depend on how his recovery evolves.

It leaves Madrid without one of the key parts of their team, just when they’d recovered Luca Modric from injury.

Kroos signed a new contract with the club recently, linking him to the club until 2022. The contract he signed when he joined from Bayern Munich was due to expire in 2020.

Here’s Madrid’s statement on his injury:

“After tests carried out today in Germany on Toni Kroos under the supervision of the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a fracture-avulsion of the base of the fifth metatarsal in the right foot.

“The injury was picked up in the last league game against Leganes. His recovery will continue to be monitored.”
