Mateo Kovacic returns to Madrid after suffering ankle pain

Real Madrid's Croatian international will hope the pain does not turn into an injury ahead of the derby clash with Atletico

Both Mateo Kovacic and Luka Modric will return to Madrid on Sunday to prepare to face Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon next weekend. Modric was planned to return but Kovacic was taken off in the second half of Croatia's 2-0 win over Iceland with some pain in his ankle.

The substitution was for precaution and in theory it should not result in an actual injury. He was taken off at half-time with Modric coming on. Neither will play in the country's freindly against Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

Inter Milan's Brozovic scored both Croatia's goals and the win took them to 10 points in their World Cup 2018 qualification group, two ahead of Ukraine who are second.
