Theo Hernandez joined in the summer to provide competition

Marcelo has agreed a new contract with Real Madrid, the club announced on Wednesday, which will see him extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2022.

The announcement from Madrid came just minutes after it had been confirmed Marcelo would be banned for the next two La Liga matches after he was sent off for kicking out at Levante's Lerma at the weekend

"Real Madrid C. F. and Marcelo have agreed to extend the player's contract, which will see him remain at the club until 30 June 2022," the club said in a bried statement.

"Tomorrow, Thursday, at 2pm, Marcelo will appear before the media in the press room of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium."

Madrid president Florentino Perez wanted to renew his two captains contracts and that has started with Marcelo, with Sergio Ramos expected to follow.

Marcelo joined Madrid from Fluminense as an 18-year-old at the beginning of the 2006-07 season. By 2009 he had become a regular in the side, a position which hadn't been propely occupied since Roberto Carlos left in 2007.

This summer, Los Blancos signed Theo Hernandez as competition for the Brazilian, but he has shown no signs of slowing down and the 29-year-old now has a deal until he is 34.
