Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed that the European champions want the midfielder

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed to RT France that Real Madrid are interested in signing Nabil Fekir.

The possible departure of Mateo Kovacic would open up space for attacking midfielder Fekir, who is currently in Russia at the World Cup with France, who have already sealed their passage to the last 16.

"He is an exceptional player, good on the ball in tight spaces, incredible talent..." said Aulas. "The fact things didn't work out with [a move to] Liverpool has led to interest from many clubs, among them Real Madrid and their manager."

Before the World Cup began, a move to Liverpool was very close, but negotiations, which looked set to be concluded, broke down at the last minute.

Aulas added: "Yes, he was set to go to Liverpool, I'd given him the green light to move forward with talks, but they took too long."

The Lyon chief assures that he would like to keep hold of Fekir, who's spent five seasons with the club, playing 148 games and scoring 55 goals.

"Anything is possible, we want him to stay but if he wants to go we will try to find the biggest team in terms of size and efficiency," he said.
