Luka Modric has taken a decision about his future

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has made a definitive decision on his future, according to newspaper AS on Thursday. After months of uncertainty and rumours in recent weeks that the Croatian was tempted to accept a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, it seems that the doubts have been dispelled.

The Madrid newspaper, specifically its deputy director Tomás Roncero, affirms that Luka Modric will stay at Real Madrid until June 2024. However, without renouncing to continue representing his country, Croatia, with which he wants to participate in the European Championship, with the finals played next summer in Germany.

Real Madrid are not very keen on Luka continuing to combine playing for the national team with the demands of the top level that playing for Real Madrid entails. But at 37 (he will be 38 in September), the midfielder put in an exceptional performance in the recent Nations League Final Four, shining against the Netherlands and Spain.

Renewal, but with a release clause

The report recalls that Modric met with president Florentino Perez last April and from that meeting came the commitment to sign a one year extension of his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, SPORT also reported that the aforementioned agreement included a release clause that would allow Luka to leave if he received an great offer.

However, the million-dollar offers from Saudi Arabian football, which had already convinced his former team-mate Karim Benzema, made Luka delay the moment to publicly ratify his continuity. The figures were in the region of 200 million euros for three seasons.

Modric feels strong enough to continue one more year in the elite with Real Madrid and Croatia, so that is his priority, as well as the preference of his family, reluctant to change Madrid for the Persian Gulf even if it means living in a golden mansion.

More competition with Bellingham

Florentino and his advisors understand that Luka has earned the right on the pitch to sign for another year, as is Real Madrid's norm for players entering their thirties, and he will compete for minutes in Ancelotti's team.

All this despite the fact that the competition for Real Madrid's starting eleven has gone up a notch with the arrival of starlet Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund, who joins Tchouameni and Camavinga as new blood in a midfield that also includes Fede Valverde and the incombustible Toni Kroos, and in which Dani Ceballos could also remain if he signs his renewal.

His goal is to keep shining for Real Madrid, but above all to try one last time to win a title with Croatia after the disappointment suffered against Spain in the Nations League.
