Kroos: The idea is to finish my career here with Real Madrid

The German midfielder gave a press conference on Thursday after the announcment of his new deal

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos says he wants to end his career at the club, when he's 35 or 36, after signing his new contract on Thursday

Kroos signed his new deal at the Bernabeu and was presented a shirt with his name and the numer 2022 on it, representing the year in which he's now linked to the club. However, the German international hopes he will continue at Madrid beyond then.

"I'va always had plans for my career," he said in a press conference. "And my plan is to retire here. It’s a six-year deal and I’m committed to playing each of those years here.

"I will be 32 when [the contract] ends and it’s a great opportunity to finish my career here. I want to retire at a high level, for that reason I'm talking about being 35 or 36 years old.

"Everyone that knows me knows I don't sign contracts on a whim. It’s a special day for me, it’s the kind of contract you’ll only sign once, or twice at the very most. I’ve spent two great years here, with many more to come I hope."

In addition, and having won the Champions League last season, Kroos now hopes Madrid can win La Liga.

Barcelona have won the title for the last two years, while Atletico Madrid won it in 2014. However, Madrid have not finished top of the table since 2012.

He added: “I want to win the league here. It’s important to us.

"At Real Madrid you have to win everything. I’ve won the Champions League but I want the league. Sometimes we lack consistency and that’s perhaps why we haven’t won it [recently]."
