Marcelo Teixeira decided to keep Neymar in Brazil when the player wanted to sign for Madrid

Former Santos president, Marcelo Teixeira, has revealed how he once blocked Neymar from signing for Real Madrid when the forward was still playing in Brazil.

In an interview with AS, Teixeira explained what happened at that time. "Los Galacticos left him with his mouth open. But we soon spoke with his father, offered him a million dollars and a deal was agreed. The board thought I was crazy but we all knew how special Neymar was and how important it was to keep him at Santos. I personally handled the negotiations," he confessed.

"The relationship between Santos and Real Madrid was problematic at this moment due to Robinho's departure. In the end, we kept hold of Neymar's rights and the relationship has been good ever since."

Teixeira added: "Neymar is one of the best players in the world due to his individual talent. I believe he has the gift to compete with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. I'm sure that will happen. His agents will advise him well."

However, he did have some advice for the Brazilian star. "I told him to play football and show his unique qualities. Those come as a result of hard work and dedication, because talent is what God gave him."
