Cristiano Ronaldo won't join up with the Portuguese national team until the rape allegations brought against him have been dealt with. Fernando Santos have confirmed that Cristiano will miss the next set of matches in UEFA's Nations League.

According to Portuguese newspaper 'Record', the striker has already spoken with the Fernando Gomes, the head of the Portuguese FA, as well as national team coach Santos. He believes that at this current moment in time it would be best if he didn't wear his country's colours with these allegations hanging over him.

Gomes expressed his "total solidarity" with the player in an interview with 'Lusa'. "In my name and in the name of the Portuguese FA, I express my total solidarity with Cristiano Ronaldo in a moment when his good name and reputation are being called into question. I believe in his word, not only because I agree that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but because I've known Ronaldo for many years and I'm a witness of his good character."

The player himself has denied the allegations aimed at him. "I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense."
