The French striker believes he is now able to demonstrate his full ability because he isn't playing second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo

Karim Benzema has been one of Real Madrid's best players following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo from the team last summer. The French striker has been tasked with replacing the goals left by the now Juventus forward.

In an interview with 'France Football', Benzema confessed that he's enjoying his role in the side more because he doesn't have to help Cristiano score in every match.

"Now I'm able to play my true game. Before I used to play to help Cristiano, now I'm the leader in attack," commented Benzema. "I feel more legitimate. I have the feeling that, from here, I'm free."

The 31-year-old Benzema is having a good season despite the club itself struggling to be consistent.

"When I was on the pitch, I was constantly looking for Cristiano Ronaldo with the objective being that he'd score the most goals possible. I had a secondary role. Now it's my time to demonstrate that I'm desperate to score, to help my team. That's what I like," said Benzema.
