Atletico 1-1 Real Madrid: Benzema strike benefits Barca

The Madrid rivals tied at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday

Karim Benzema kept Real Madrid’s title defence alive with his 88th minute goal in the Madrid derby on Sunday. Casemiro set him up to strike late on against Atletico Madrid, who could have out the game out of sight well before then.

Luis Suarez broke the deadlock in the 15th minute with his 17th goal of the season, after good work by Marcos Llorente on the right.

The midfielder slipped in Suarez, who produced a slick finish to beat Thibaut Courtois.

Madrid’s goalkeeper denied Yannick Carrasco and Suarez early in the second half, while Llorente lashed over and Angel Correa fired off-target.

It was a host of misses which Atletico came to regret.

With 10 minutes to go, Real Madrid started to show up. Jan Oblak made a great double save from Benzema, before tipping the Frenchman’s free-kick away.

Eventually they cracked when Benzema played a one-two with Casemiro and slipped the ball home.

Atletico are now three points clear of Barcelona and five ahead of Real Madrid, having played a game less than the two giants. The title race is still alive.
