Iker Muniain sent the Basques ahead in the first half, stabbing home from close range after a scramble in the box, against a Madrid that created just a couple of chances, one wasted by Luka Modric, another from which Marco Asensio forced a good save.
Sergio Ramos missed from close range after Athletico goalkeeper Unai Simon parried Gareth Bale’s free-kick, when the defender really should have scored.
However Julen Lopetegui threw on Isco in the 61st minute, giving the Andalusian playmaker a free role behind the front three, and in the 64th he headed in the equaliser.
Toni Kroos’s fine ball played in Gareth Bale, who crossed for Isco to head home.
A tense game played out without too much further incident, bar a spate of bookings, leaving Barcelona as sole leaders of La Liga.
