The newspapers claims Madrid could even have a new coach by the weekend

Jose Mourinho is best placed to take over at Real Madrid, according to Diario AS, although there's a section of the board that don't back his return. Another ex-coach, Zinedine Zidane, is also wanted, although the French coach is less likely to want to go back at this moment in time.

The offices at Madrid at the moment are a cauldron, the report adds, as the club look to start again after a nightmare week. Santiago Solari's side were knocked out of the Copa del Rey, the La Liga title race and the Champions League in the space of seven days.

SOLARI

Solari's future now depends on what president Florentino Perez and his general director José Ángel Sánchez decide. He has a contract until 2020 but has always been seen as the interim option to oversee a short-term transition.

But the team's freefall in three competitions, Solari's differences with some big players (Isco, Keylor Navas, Marcelo, Asensio) and the fact he's been unable to get a reaction from his team mean his job is on the line.

NEW COACH?

From there, AS say there could even be a new coach before the weekend. Madrid play Real Valladolid on Sunday night.

For the moment, Mourinho is the only coach ready to take over immediately. Zidane would not want to return now and maybe not at all, but if he did, it would be in the summer. Other options like Mauricio Pochettino, Jurgen Klopp and Massimiliamo Allegri (Juventus) are all currently employed and have lots to play for at their current clubs between now and the summer.
