West Ham have confirmed the signing of former France international Patrice Evra on a "short-term deal" believed to be in the end of the season.

Evra left French side Marseille earlier this season after having his contract rescinded following an incident in which he kicked a supporter during a Europa League game.

The left-back is not allowed to play in European competitions, but is available to play in the Premier League, which is fine for West Ham.

“I’m really happy to be a Hammer, to be back in the Premier League and I love this game!” the former Manchester United player told the club's website.

“It’s amazing to be back and I am thankful to West Ham for giving me the opportunity to do my job. When I wake up and know I am going to work hard, to have fun with my teammates and give my best on the pitch, I want to say a massive thanks to West Ham, to the Chairman, to the manager to all my teammates, who have given me a nice welcome, my agent and my brother.

“I’m just happy to be here, it’s really simple. You don’t realise how lucky you are and just to wake up this morning and know I am going to train with my new teammates made me smile!”

Evra played 379 games for United during eight seasons in the Premier League. West Ham are currently 12th in the league with 27 points, three clear of the drop zone, and could make his debut against Watford on Feb. 10.

Real Betis had also been interested in signing Evra, who left United for Juventus before moving to Marseille.
