"I don't want to have any influence on the next coach but I have a high opinion of Luis Enrique," said Wenger

Arséne Wenger praised former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique, who is one of the top candidates to succeed the long-time Arsenal manager when he steps away from the club at the end of the season after 22 years in charge.

In a press conference before the Europa League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid, Wenger admitted that he did not want to leave Arsenal as he had time left on his contract with the Gunners and said  the north London club had sacked him.

"The timing wasn’t really my decision. For the rest, I have spoken about it already," Wenger said.

The coach said his work had not been affected by the announcement and he was as focused as ever on trying to win the Europa League, saying "I'm as working as hard as ever."

Wenger has said he would like Patrick Vieira to succeed him but he was also asked what he thought about Luis Enrique, who is on a year sabbatical and has been heavily linked with the job.

"I have a high opinion of him but I don't want to have an influence on the next manager," said the Frenchman.
