The Man Utd player is heading back to the club where he developed

Jose Mourinho is happy to let him return to Everton on a free transfer

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney underwent a medical with Everton on Saturday ahead of a return to Goodsion Park, the BBC have reported.

Rooney is set to finalise his move to Everton in the coming hours, the club who he made his Premier League debut for as a 17-year-old in 2002.

United's decision to let Rooney leave coincides with their move for Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, with an 85 million euro fee agreed with Everton this week.

Jose Mourinho has given his backing to Rooney's move to Everton, which will see the England striker move on a free transfer while his former club fund part of his wages.

A few days ago Rooney said: "Of course I would like to return [to Everton], I have been at this club [Manchester Unted] for 13 years and what I want is to play."
