The Man Utd legend has given an exclusive interview to Piers Morgan this week

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed Pep Guardiola and Manchester City wanted to sign him last summer.

Ronaldo returned to Manchester United from Juventus in 2021 but only after City had made their move for the Portugal forward.

"I was close to going to City, it's something I talked about a lot, they tried a lot," Ronaldo told Piers Morgan in an interview on Wednesday.

"Guardiola did everything he could to take me to City.

"But my heart, my feelings and what I had done before, and Sir Alex Ferguson, made the difference."

As Ronaldo said, the key to opting to go back to United was played by Ferguson, who was the coach during his first spell at Old Trafford.

However, despite maintaining he still loves the club, Ronaldo has hit out at the coaching staff and owners this week.

In comments which may see him leave the club in January, he says the club has not moved on at all since he left for Real Madrid in 2009.

Ronaldo has lost his place in the United side this season under Erik ten Hag.
