Manchester City continue to strengthen with no thought for the cost and barely a week after making Kyle Walker the most expensive defender in history, the club will break the bank again to pay €57.5 million for Benjamin Mendy from Monaco, according to L’Equipe.
The French left back joined Monaco for €13 million from Olympique de Marseille and was a key member in Monaco’s league win last season, as well as their run to the Champions League semi-final.
It is thought that it was the quarter final tie with Manchester City when Guardiola was convinced to make him a priority target, having decided to completely rebuild City’s defence. According to L’Equipe, Monaco had rejected offers of €40 million, €45 million and €52.5 million before finally accepting €57.5 million. The fee surpasses the one paid for Kyle Walker and the one paid for John Stones last year, making him the most expensive defender in history. He is third signing City have made to shore up their defence after Walker and the goalkeeper Ederson.
