Rashford opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a brilliant individual effort. The England international raced down the left, cut in and then fired beyond the diving Loris Karius.
Ten minutes later the same player doubled the home side's advantage, his deflected strike finding the back of the net.
Liverpool enjoyed the majority of the possession and rallied after the break but they didn't create many clear-cut chances.
Jurgen Klopp's side did pull one goal back when Eric Bailly deflected Saido Mane's cross into his own net in comical fashion.
However, Liverpool's pressure in the final stages didn't lead to an equaliser and United saw out a valuable three points.
Jose Mourinho's side extend their lead in second place over Liverpool to five points, although they remain 13 behind runaway leaders Manchester City, who have a game in hand as well.
