The Premier League club will continue to pay their staff during the pandemic

The coronavirus crisis is having a huge effect on the finances of football clubs across Europe, forcing many to make cutbacks and to take difficult decisions.

Barcelona have agreed to a 70 percent wage cut with their players and will furlough (ERTE) their non-playing staff, whose salaries will be topped up by the club and the players to make sure they don't lose any money.

Liverpool announced on Saturday, meanwhile, that they would furlough non-sporting staff during the pandemic, taking advantage of the UK government's scheme.

However, that decision drew strong criticism in England, with Liverpool making over 40 million euros profit last season, and Manchester City have announced they will not be following their lead.

"We can confirm, following a decision by the Chairman and Board last week, that Manchester City will not be utilising the UK Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme [government funded furloughing],” a City spokesperson said.

“We remain determined to protect our people, their jobs and our business whilst at the same time doing what we can to support our wider community at this most challenging time for everybody.”

Talks are ongoing with the Premier League and the Players' Football Association (PFA) over a possible wage cut for the players.
