Mo Salah was not messing around and started superbly, tucking home from Andrew Robertson's low cross to the back post after a fine burst forward from new signing Naby Keita.
Jurgen Klopp sat back and watched delightedly as Sadio Mane then increased the lead with a brace, the second of which was scored after being offside but it was still given as the Premier League does not yet have VAR.
Substitute Daniel Sturridge scored the fourth from close range mere seconds after coming on from the bench. Too easy for the Reds, who will likely be the main contenders to take City's title away from them this season.
