Chelsea chief Abramovich hit by UK sanctions... no signings or ticket sales

The Blues have been batted by the government's new anti-Oligarch sanctions on Russians

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been hit by sanctions which affect the club too, as part of punishments the UK has finally announced after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Abramovich is one of seven oligarchs to be sanctioned and it looks like it could halt Abramovich’s sale of the club.

Season ticket holders can still go to games but Chelsea cannot sell any more home or away tickets and the club shop will be closed, because Abramovich’s assets have been frozen.

"Football clubs are cultural assets and the bedrock of our communities," tweeted the UK’s culture secretary.

“I know this brings some uncertainty, but the government will work with the league and clubs to keep football being played while ensuring sanctions hit those intended.

"Our priority is to hold those who have enabled the Putin regime to account."
