Spain player ratings: Tough night for De Gea as Costa purrs

Goalkeeper De Gea had an off night as Spain drew 3-3 with Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo's late free-kick was a jar of cold water over the Spanish national team as they drew 3-3 with Portugal on Friday.

Diego Costa had twice levelled after two Ronaldo goals and Nacho Fernandez's brilliant strike looked set to give La Roja the win in Sochi.

However, Ronaldo struck late on to compete his hat-trick and ruin Spain's night.

Here are the player ratings from Fernando Hierro's first game in charge...

DE GEA (3) His night was marked by a huge error for Ronaldo’s second goal. Sent the wrong way for the penalty and didn’t even move for the free-kick.

NACHO (7) Given the tough task of filling in for Dani Carvajal at right-back and gave away the penalty, fouling Ronaldo. Improved as the game progressed and scored a brilliant goal.

PIQUÉ (4) Fouled Ronaldo with minutes to go to gift Portugal the free kick which cost Spain the win.

RAMOS (6) A decent performance from the Real Madrid defender, who kept his position well and was the best of Spain’s two centre-backs.

ALBA (6) As is normal, got forward as much as he could and rarely struggled in defence. A solid display from the Barcelona man.

BUSQUETS (5) Played further forward than normal and that allowed Portugal to break too easily. Not one of his best nights.

KOKE (5) Disappeared. Had a couple of moments of quality in he second half but, in general, was hardly seen.

INIESTA (6) Struggled to make his mark on the game until the second half, when he began to get better before being replaced by Thiago.

ISCO (7) Caused the most problems for the Portugal defence thanks to his dribbling skills and his incisive passing. An exhibition from the former Malaga man.

SILVA (7) Linked well with Isco and Costa and helped Spain dominate the ball.

DIEGO COSTA (8) Lethal. The Hispanic-Brazilian needed a fame like this. Scored a double and was brilliant in perhaps his best ever Spain performance.

SUBSTITUTES

THIAGO (6) Sent on for Iniesta to help Spain keep the ball and see the game out, which they didn’t manage.

IAGO ASPAS (-) Came on late on for Costa.

LUCAS VÁZQUEZ (-) Came on even later than Aspas but was a witness for Ronaldo’s equaliser.
