Forsberg goal sends Sweden through at Switzerland's expense

Sweden are into the last eight of the World Cup for the first time in 24 years

Sweden are into the quarterfinals of the World Cup after edging out Switzerland 1-0 in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday.

Emil Forsberg scored the only goal of the game as Sweden made the last eight for the first time since 1994, when they lost to Brazil in the semifinals.

They will meet the winners of the game between England and Colombia, which is played later on Tuesday, on Saturday.

Sweden were the better side throughout the game although both sides struggled to create clear chances.

Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer made a decent save from Marcus Berg to keep the scores level at the break.

As the second half advanced, it looked like a moment of magic or a stroke of luck could settle the tie and the latter proved true.

Sommer would have saved Forsberg’s striker but it took a huge deflection, deceiving the goalkeeper and giving Sweden the lead.

There was a Swiss reaction of sorts but they failed to really trouble Robin Olsen in the Sweden goal.

In fact, it was Sweden who could have added the game’s second goal in stoppage time.

Martin Olsson was tugged down by Michael Lang as he raced clean through, with the referee pointing to the penalty spot and pulling out the red card.

However, a VAR review revealed the initial foul was outside the area -- the penalty decision was reversed but the red card stood.

Ola Toivonen’s resulting free-kick from the edge of the box was palmed away by Sommer but there was not time for another Switzerland attack.
