Uruguay's worst fears have become a reality - Edinson Cavani cannot start for them in the World Cup quarter-final clash with France, even though the news is not official yet.

The PSG striker missed training on Wednesday and worked inside in the gym and doing physio after suffering a calf injury against Portugal in the previous phase.

Uruguayan media say coach Oscar Tabarez has discarded the forward from his starting line up on Friday, although Cavani might be able to take a place on the bench.

Cavani was taken off with 18 minutes to go as Uruguay beat Portugal 2-1 thanks to two goals from the striker.
