The Portugal man was let off the hook after clash with Iran's Pouraliganji

An elbow was about to cost Cristiano Ronaldo dear on Monday as Portugal played to stay in the World Cup against Iran in Russia.

After missing a second half penalty to double his country's lead, the Real Madrid man clashed with Morteza Pouraliganji, throwing an elbow in the direction of the Iran defender.

Those in charge of VAR called the incident to the referee's attention, but the Paraguayan official, Enrique Cáceres, did not feel there was motive to send Ronaldo off.

However, after watching replays of Ronaldo's elbow, the referee did decide to give the Portugal No.7 a yellow card.

Ronaldo was left to breath a sigh of relief as it could quite easily have been a red card, which would have ruled him out of the last 16 tie against Uruguay.

Portugal booked their place in the next round as runners-up to Spain in Group B with the 1-1 draw against Iran.
