Villarreal 3-0 Atletico: Four defeats in seven games for Simeone

Atletico Madrid were beaten 3-0 by Villarreal on Monday as their nightmare run of form in La Liga continued.

Manuel Trigueros, Jonathan dos Santos and Roberto Soriano scored the goals as Fran Escriba's men earned a deserved three points at El Madrigal.

Diego Simeone's side were unbeaten through their first eight games this season, but have now lost four of their last seven and are sixth in the table.

They're 12 points behind leaders Real Madrid and six behind second place Barcelona.

Villarreal, in contrast, moved back into the Champions League places with this win, although they are only one point ahead of Atletico.

Trigueros scored the opening goal here after a mistake from Tiago Mendes. There was just 28 minutes gone but the Portuguese midfielder was immediately taken off, replaced by Saul.

He didn't seem injured at the time, but the club did later claim he was substituted with a knock.

Former Barcelona player dos Santos added the second before half-time, forcing over the line from close range as Jan Oblak picked up an injury. He was replaced by Miguel Angel Moya.

Villarreal shut up shop after the break and Atletico didn't come close to breaking them down. Antoine Griezmann, named third in the Ballon d'Or on Monday, is now eight games without a goal.

Soriano added the third in injury time to put the gloss on Villarreal's impressive performance.
