Two penalties helped the hosts see off Diego Simeone's lads, but it was a deserved victory
Atletico Madrid tumbled to defeat at Anoeta against a well-drilled Real Sociedad.
The goals came from two penalties, Carlos Vela in the 54th minute, and Willian Jose in the 74th, as Diego Simeone's side put in arguably their worst performance of the season.
The hosts were on top throughout and gave the Rojiblancos little room to breathe.
Atletico therefore stay behind Barcelona regardless of the Catalans' result against Sevilla on Sunday night.
For now they stay third but if Jorge Sampaoli's team get a result against Barcelona they could drop down the table.
