The former Spain and Real Madrid coach will look to rebuild his career at the Sanchez Pizjuan

Sevilla have confirmed Julen Lopetegui as their new coach, with the former Spain boss penning a three-year deal with the La Liga side.

Lopetegui has been appointed by Monchi, who returned to Sevilla earlier this season after a brief spell at Serie A side Roma.

He takes over at the Sanchez Pizjuan following a brief spell at Real Madrid, who he joined in controversial circumstances which saw him forced to leave the Spain job on the eve of the World Cup.

Prior to that, Lopetegui has coached Rayo Vallecano, Real Madrid Castilla, Porto and a number of Spain's youth teams, including the U21s.

"Sevilla FC and Julen Lopetegui Argote have reached an agreement for the 53-year-old coach to take over in Nevion for the next three years," the club said. "The Basque coach arrives in Seville on Tuesday and will be presented on Wednesday."

Lopetegui replaces Joaquin Caparros, who took over last season when Pablo Machin was fired. Sevilla have not had a settled coach for a while, with Eduardo Berizzo and Vincenzo Montella also failing to last in the role.

Ex-Roma coach Eusebio De Francesco was also in the running this time around, but the Italian has missed out on the job to Lopetegui.
