Griezmann ends long goal drought as Atletico beat Eibar

Saul also scored as Simeone's side started the New Year with a win in the league

Antoine Griezmann scored his first Atletico Madrid goal in 834 minutes as Diego Simeone’s side beat Eibar 2-0 on Saturday.

Griezmann hadn’t scored since the seventh round of fixtures in Spain, when he was top scorer in the league, but scored the second goal as Atletico edged a tough match in the Basque Country.

Eibar have an impressive home record and they were best for large parts of this encounter.

However, they didn’t take advantage of their chances and fell behind in the second half when Saul Niguez scored from a corner.

Resembling the Atletico which has been so successful under Simeone — more compact, tighter in defence, good from set plays — the game was killed off when Griezmann scored from a Kevin Gameiro pass.

Atletico temporarily leapfrog Villarreal into fourth place in the table.
