Del Bosque: I sent a message to all 22 players, but not to Casillas
Vicente del Bosque has revealed that during Euro 2016 the relationship between Iker Casillas and the coaching staff was not ideal.
"With his team-mates he was perfect, but he was only so-so with the coaching staff. For that reason the only one I didn’t send a message [about my departure to] was Casillas. He feels bad with me, but also with [fitness coach] Javier Minano and [assistant coach] Toni Grande. With everyone else he has been fine. The anger has been with us," Del Bosque explained on El Larguero on Cadena Ser.
Regardless of what happened at the the Euros in France, Del Bosque, who won't continue as Spain boss, added that he has "a lot of appreciation" for Casillas and that he's confident the anger will pass and they can fix things through talking.
Casillas, Spain's starting goalkeeper for more than a decade, was left out of the starting line-up for the first time in a tournament since 2000.
"I'm sure that he is hurting or displeased with me and I understand that. He thinks we have done the wrong thing," Del Bosque continued, saying that the decision to choose David de Gea was made by his "body".
"Maybe we weren't right or we made a blunder [picking De Gea]. But we have to be proud of a player who has 167 games with the national team and I don't believe three or four games will hurt his CV.
"Casillas hasn't disappointed me. I have a great appreciation for him. I have known him since he was nine years old. I've known his parents for a long time, from when they used to bring him to training, and I feel proude that player has played so many games for the national team."
