Atletico Madrid maintained their unbeaten start to the La Liga season with a 2-0 win over Real Valladolid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday.

Thomas Lemar and Marcos Llorente got the goals as Diego Simeone's side made it seven straight wins in the league.

The three points take Atletico two clear of Real Sociedad at the top of the table despite having played a game fewer.

La Real will return to first place if they win at Alaves on Sunday, although they will have played two more games than Atletico.

Luis Suarez returned to the Atletico side after recovering from coronavirus but Saturday's goals came from elsewhere.

Lemar opened the scoring in the 56th minute with a fine finish after Kieran Trippier's cross.

Trippier was again the creator for the second goal, freeing Llorente, who showed great pace before firing home from 18 yards.

Simeone's side travel to rivals Real Madrid next weekend in a game that will put their title credentials to the test.
