The triumph was sealed by Antoine Griezmann's 61st minute strike

New stadium, same old Atletico. The grandeur of the stage has never influenced the football that Diego Simeone extracts from his Atletico stars and they delivered their classic one goal victory to earn them three points on a landmark night.

Incidencias

partido correspondiente a la cuarta jornada de LaLiga Santander disputado en el estadio Wanda Metropolitano ante 63.114 espectadores. El Rey Felipe VI presidió el primer encuentro de la historia del nuevo estadio del Atlético de Madrid.

The Wanda Metropolitano is a much more impressive home than the shabby Vicente Calderon was, but the Calderon was home. It was noisy, it was raucous, even, it was crumbling but it did a job. More than a job, it was Atletico's base as Simeone helped them through five sensational years where they surpassed all expecations.

But Atletico want to take the next step forward and the Metropolitano will help them do that. Against Malaga they showed that fears they will not be able to reproduce their game are unfounded.

Extremely tight at the back, with Jan Oblak only have to make one good save from Borja Baston, Atletico eventually broke through in the 61st minute. A little magic from Angel Correa helped him carve out some space on the right to cut the ball back, and there was Griezmann seven yards out to smash the ball home.

A goal which will write his name in the history books, and not because it was his 100th league strike. Griezmann's goal marks the start of Atletico's new era. The season started nearly a month ago, but it really begins here, for the Rojiblancos.
