Atletico hand Saul Niguez bumper NINE-year deal until 2026

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has signed a new nine-year deal with the club. 

Saul impressed at the recent UEFA U21 Championships for Spain, scoring a hat-trick in the semi-final win against Italy. 

Talks had been on going with Atletico prior to the tournament and the Rojiblanco have now confirmed a huge extension for the highly-rated 22-year-old. 

“I will work to my full potential on the field as always to pay back the trust that the club is giving to me,” Saul said. 

“I’d like to thank all my teammates and the coaching staff for their help day by day so that I can be the player I am today.”

Saul has been part of the Atletico first team since 2014, following a loan spell with Rayo Vallecano. 

In total he has made 136 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side, scoring 22 goals along the way. 

Barça could have signed Saul last summer for 45 million euros, but his release clause was later increased to 80 million and now stands at 100 million after this renewal.

El director deportivo del Atlético de Madrid, José Luis Pérez Caminero, resaltó a Saúl como "un ejemplo para todos los niños" que se forman en la cantera del club rojiblanco.

"Un ejemplo de entrega, trabajo para el equipo, solidaridad sobre el terreno de juego y una calidad impresionante", destacó el exfutbolista rojiblanco.

Caminero resaltó entre las virtudes de Saúl que es un "futbolista completo" con "gran juego aéreo", un "disparo de larga distancia tremendo" y "trabajador incansable" con "experiencia pese a su juventud".

"Debemos sentirnos muy felices por el acuerdo alcanzado porque se trata de un grandísimo jugador al que no veo límites en su crecimiento", añadió el director deportivo rojiblanco.

Con este acuerdo, el Atlético blinda a uno de sus jugadores más prometedores extendiendo su contrato y probablemente mejorando sus condiciones económicas, como ya ha hecho recientemente con jugadores como el delantero francés Antoine Griezmann o el centrocampista de la cantera Jorge 'Koke' Resurrección.
