Alaves 1-0 Celta Vigo: Basque side reach first ever Copa del Rey final

Mendizorrotza shook on Wednesday as Alaves reached the Copa del Rey final for the first time in the history with a win over Celta Vigo, setting up a showdown with Barcelona in May.

It looked like the goal which ultimately sent them through would never arrive at times.

After a goalless draw at Balaidos, it was back to the Basque Country to decide who would get a shot at Barça and it was Alaves who made all the running.

Celta goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez was possibly their best player as Deyverson and Ibai Gomez both came close on more than one occasion to breaking the deadlock.

In Iago Aspas, though, the visitors possess one of Spain's in-form players and he had two good efforts in the first half.

The first drew a fine save from Fernando Pacheco and the second, a clever lobbed effort, landed on the rood of the net.

Truth be told it was one-way traffic in the second half, though, but as the tie ticked past 170 minutes, it was still goalless.

Step forward Edgard Mendez. The former Almeria and Granada winger had been on the pitch for a matter of minutes when he galloped through the middle of the Celta defence and beat Alvarez.

Mendizorrotza shook but the work did not finish there.

Celta had seven minutes of normal time and then an additional six to find an equaliser. Free-kicks and corners saw Alvarez join in the attacks, but there was to be no late goal.

Having beaten Real Madrid, they've fallen at Alaves -- and few would say it wasn't completely deserved.

And a word for Alaves: In this, their first season back in the top flight, they find themselves on a run of just one defeat in 17 games and now they have their first ever Copa del Rey final to look forward to.

It will be against Barça. A side they shocked at Camp Nou earlier this season and a side they just so happen to be hosting in Vitoria this weekend.
