At 33 years old, Luka Modric was crowned the best player in the world in the eyes of FIFA. The Croatian central midfielder recieved The Best award on Monday, taking the position from former Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, who decided not to come to the gala after finding out he would not win.

The veteran midfielder beat Ronaldo and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah to the award. Modric won the Champions League with Madrid and took Croatia to the World Cup final, where he was chosen as the player of the tournament.

In the past decade Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have won every award going more or less, so Modric makes a change.
