Norwegian footballer Ingrid Engen joins FC Barcelona from Wolfsburg

Ingrid Engen has officially joined FC Barcelona. One of football's worst-kept secrets has now been confirmed, with the Norwegian player joining the club on a deal until 2023 after leaving Wolfsburg.

Engen, aged 23, joins Barcelona in a transfer that will bolster Barça Femení's centre midfield options: a position which has been weakened with the departures of Vicky Losada and Kheira Hamraoui. She brings with her a great deal of flexibility, and can even play higher up the pitch if required. In typical Barça fashion, Engen is comfortable playing between the lines and is known for making clever runs from deep into the box.

One of the shining lights of women's football, Engen has lots of experience under her belt despite her tender age. After playing for SK Trondheims-Ørn and LSK Kvinner, she signed for Wolfsburg in 2019. Now, just 2 years later, she finds herself playing for the best team in Europe.

The midfielder joins on a free transfer from the German club, having decided that she wanted a new challenge. "This signing means a lot to me. I'm very proud to have joined [Barça]. Playing here is a dream come true", she said in an interview with the club's official channels. "They're the best team in the world, for how they play and for everything they have won. I can't wait to join the group", she added. She also stated that she thinks her style of play "could be a good fit for the side".

Engen is one of Barcelona's first three summer signings, in addition to the signings of Irene Paredes and Rolfo, as the club seeks to prolong its domination of women's football. Following the departure of Vicky Losada and Kheira Hamraoui, the time has come for Barça to announce their new signings, and Engen has been the first.
