Meanwhile Sevilla destroyed Akhisarspor 6-0 and Villarreal beat Rapid Vienna 5-0.
"This is an important victory for us, not just for the three points and to go top, but because it is prestigious after many years this team has not competed in Europe," enthused Betis coach Quique Setien after the game.
"We had a great game, a great first half. In the second half they tested us more. They were surprised by our play, we pressed them bringing out the ball very well.”
Sevilla are joint top of Group J with Krasnodar and Standard Liege, all on six points, while Villarreal are joint top of Group G on five points with Rangers, who could not beat Spartak Moscow at home.
