Police officer dies after clashes between Spartak & Athletic fans
The officer suffered a heart attack while trying to strop fights on the streets
A police officer was killed during clashes with Spartak Moscow supporters before the Russian side’s Europa League game in Bilbao against Athletic Club.
The officer suffered a heart attack while trying to strop fights on the streets in the Basque city between rival fans, which ended with five people arrested.
He was later announced dead in hospital in Bilbao, where he had been taken following the violent scenes.
The game went ahead and Spartak won 2-1 on the night but were eliminated 4-3 on aggregate as the La Liga side had won the first leg 3-1 in Moscow.
Russian fans were also involved in violence at the European Championships in France last summer, when they clashed with England fans before their opening game.
They are due to host the World Cup this summer and there are plans in place to try and prevent any violence.
