Girona’s supporters chanted for independence after their narrow win at Cornella and theirs were the only voices.
Espanyol fans spoke up before, whistling and jeering the visitors’ chants for liberty and freedom, but also hitting out at the coach and the board after another disappointing home display which leaves them four points above the drop zone.
David Timor opened the scoring with the last kick of the first half, prodding home from close range after a corner caused a scramble in the box.
Espanyol improved after the break but still created few chances of note, with Bono tipping one Leo Baptistao header wide after an excellent cross from Victor Sanchez.
Girona wing-backs Johan Mojica and Pablo Maffeo both impressed for the visitors, who were good value for their win and sit happily in ninth place. Espanyol, meanwhile, must improve and quickly.
