The English club will spend 80 million euros on the midfielder

Manchester City are in a rush to sign Frenkie de Jong. According to the Daily Star, the Premier League champions will even break their own transfer record to land the Ajax midfielder.

The reports claim City will pay the Dutch club 80 million euros for the Holland international. That would beat the 70 million they paid Leicester for Riyad Mahrez.

In addition, Pep Guardiola's team are keen to wrap things up in the coming weeks -- ensuring a deal is done by January, although leaving him on loan at Ajax until the summer.

Barcelona also have a long-standing interest in De Jong. While the player is keen to move to the Catalan side, the English club look more likely to pay Ajax's fee.

At the moment, the English press believe City are in pole position.
