The German side have an advantage to take into the second leg in Munich

Bayern Munich won 1-0 to deepen the crisis of a Paris Saint-Germain side that is still immersed in its own 'via crucis'. If the Parisians were hoping to be cured by the Champions League, they were in the wrong scenario, and also against the wrong opponent, and ended up conceding a precious advantage at home, which complicates the tie.

Kylian Mbappe pushed to be fit for the game but Galtier preferred to keep him on the bench, with Lionel Messi and Neymar starting in attack.

The basis of what was to be the first few minutes was clear from the start, with Choupo-Moting trying his luck within 30 seconds of the opening whistle. The Germans wanted to dominate, making no concessions to the home side who were running after the ball. In response, PSG closed in to avoid trouble, relying on a few forays from Messi and Neymar.

But despite Nagelsmann's side's high pressing, the chances didn't threaten Donnarumma too much. A Musiala chance, blocked by Sergio Ramos, and a dangerous subsequent free-kick that Kimmich sent into the clouds, were the clearest in the first half-hour of play.

Just before the break, Kimmich had the clearest chance of the half, with a ball that he picked up on the edge of the area and sent powerfully straight into the hands of a well-placed Donnarumma. Almost immediately afterwards PSG's chance came with a free-kick some 30 yards from the Bayern goal. Messi smashed the ball into the wall to end the first half.

The home side looked more lively after the break, but the blow soon came. As if in a bad dream that keeps repeating itself, PSG saw Coman, a player brought up in their youth academy, and who scored in the 2020 final against the Parisians, score the first. Davies arrived on the left, lifted his head and saw his team-mate arrive on the other side.

It was a shock that brought about the expected change in Galtier's side, who decided to bring on Mbappé to the delight of the fans. But not even with that could they level. Bayern pressed forward in search of a second, with Musiala's strikes and Choupo-Moting's attempts putting the French side back on the ropes.

And while bad news came for Bayern with Coman having to go off injured, the Parc des Princes grew with a double chance for Mbappé and Neymar. It was a wake-up call, which made it clear that a flash of brilliance from the PSG stars could change the outcome of the match.

It became clearer soon after, when the connection between the two players worked. The ball ended up in the net but the VAR drew the line by disallowing the goal for a millimetric offside against the Frenchman. The beast had been awakened. Nuno Mendes played the ball to Messi who shot just over. It was PSG's best minutes, and they looked close to an equaliser.

But Bayern held on and secured a very important victory, both for the tie and for morale.
