Last season's finalists couldn't find away past the German champions

Liverpool could not find a way past Bayern Munich on Tuesday as they were held to a goalless draw by the Germans in the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp's side, a long way from their best, were not able to make the Anfield factor count. The game started well but lost it's spark and it's everything to play for going into the second leg in Munich next month.

It's also true that Bayern missed the chance to score an away goal. Klopp was without his three best centre-backs due to injuries and suspensions. He started with Matip and Fabinho in the middle of the back four.

Further forward, Salah was not at his best despite some excellent service from Jordan Henderson. At the other end, Gnabry set up Lewandowski but Alisson saved.

Mane was also wasteful for Liverpool in a fun first half but there was not so much fun after the break. Bayern seemed to settle for the draw, retreating slightly.

Anfield asked for more from Liverpool but the couldn't. The home side failed to score at home for the first time in four months, when they drew with Manchester City.

The tie is delicately poised ahead of the second leg at the Allianz Arena.
