The Juventus defender was furious at the manner of his side's elimination

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini could not control his anger after referee Michael Oliver awarded Real Madrid a penalty in stoppage time on Wednesday.

The Italian side were winning 3-0, bringing the tie back to 3-3 on aggregare, when Lucas Vazquez went down easily under a challenge from Mehdi Benatia. Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the spot to send Madrid into the last four after goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had been sent off for protesting the decision.

In that moment of high tension, Chiellini was arguing with various Madrid players. And beIN Sports captured images of him saying "you pay, you pay," in reference to the decisions which often go in the Spanish side's favour in Europe.

Speaking after the game, the Italy international added in an interview with Mediaset: “It shouldn’t be surprising, Bayern Munich went through it last year and this was Juve’s turn.

“Between the first leg and this one, just about everything happened. It’s laughable that the Italian refereeing designator said things are going well in the Champions League.

“Nobody thought we could turn it around, but we believed and it’ll help us for the next Champions League campaigns. It’ll be an objective for the future.”

An irate Chiellini said on the penalty decision: “It wasn’t an issue of VAR, because the referee still needs to have courage and a conscience. The referee must try to be less of a protagonist and give only clear-cut decisions.

“You could tell at the time it wasn’t a penalty, but seeing the footage back it’s just laughable."
