Barcelona have got one of their summer tasks done. Renewing Samuel Umtiti was one of their priorities and they have finally reached an agreement to keep him at the club despite the danger of losing him being very real ay one point.
In fact, Barça believed he would leave in April, when he received a huge offer from Manchester United. However, he finally told Jose Mourinho 'no' for sporting reasons.
Umtiti was not convinced by the project at Old Trafford and didn't believe he would win the big titles like he does at Barcelona. He will stay at Camp Nou for many years.
The talks weren't easy. There were tense moments. Umtiti, with United's offer on the table, asked for a lot of money to renew. As a regular, he wanted to be paid like the best players in the squad. The figures were too high for Barça and talks broke down.
It was in May that Umtiti began to open the door to a renewal, though. Barca increased their first offer knowing it would be tough to replace him -- and maybe even more expensive in the current market.
The two parties got closer together and Umtiti ruled out a move to England. The final details were resolved 15 days ago when the contract began to be drawn up.
