The LaLiga chief says Barça still need to sell more players to balance the books

Javier Tebas, the president of LaLiga, was interviewed on Movistar on Monday and he reviewed the league's current situation and also spoke about FC Barcelona.

Tebas was questioned about Barça's options for signings in the January transfer window and outlined the conditions under which they can bring in new players.

Tebas acknowledged that Barça had improved their financial situation: "They have improved quite a lot. They have made an effort in their wage bill. I think they still have to make an effort for next season, but they have managed to bring in good players."

But he explained that financial fair play is still a problem for the club and that they should "change some things to be able to sign."

The LaLiga president went on to say that "it will depend on whether there are players leaving, if there are savings, they will be able to incorporate [new players]."

Therefore, Barça need to sell if they want to be active in the January window. It is a scenario that the club will try to avoid with the size of its squad and the level of the youngsters in the reserve team, such as Fermín, Casadó and Cubarsí.

Regarding his relationship with Joan Laporta, Tebas acknowledged that "we have spoken and some of the misunderstandings that existed have been ironed out."

However, he disagreed with his decision to keep Barça in the Super League: "I don't understand it. It's a decision I can't respect because the Super League does a lot of damage to the national leagues, but they think it's the best thing for their club."

The Negreira case

The president of LaLiga was particularly harsh on Barça when talking about the 'Negreira case,' assuring that if it had been up to him he would have asked for a disciplinary sanction.

"Just trying to influence refereeing is already a crime of sporting corruption, as the examining magistrate recently said in an order. The corresponding disciplinary case should have been opened and the social discipline judge of La Liga should have taken the corresponding decision within our statutory scope, which ranges from a warning to relegation, depending on the seriousness of the case," Tebas said.

Tebas would not have been shaken when it came to relegating Barça "if the social disciplinary judge so decided. The president does not decide the relegation, just as he did not decide the relegation of Elche or Guadalajara. Personally, I would have denounced that those actions had to have a disciplinary sanction."

The LaLiga president did not dare to predict the end of the case: "There is still a long way to go in the investigation, but there are behaviours that cannot be explained. I don't know if there will be consequences for Barça. We have already seen with Osasuna that there were sanctions for their directors and not for the club. Something similar could happen or they could all end up acquitted, but there will have to be explanations for a lot of behaviour."

The court is investigating and the league is putting forward evidence. The league could not act previously due to time constraints in the new Spanish Sports Law.
