Setien's response to Pique's complaints about referees helping Madrid

Setien's response to Pique's complaints about referees helping Madrid

The Barça coach was asked about the decisions at Anoeta on Sunday

Quique Setien, the Barcelona coach, spoke to the press on Monday ahead of Tuesday's match against Athletic Club at Camp Nou.

Barcelona are no longer top of the table after drawing at Sevilla on Friday. Instead, Real Madrid, level on points, are in first place after a controversial 2-1 win at Real Sociedad which saw a number of decisions go in their favor.

"There are things we cannot control and don't depend on us," Setien said of Madrid's VAR calls. "We have to try to win our games and do what we have to do. As for yesterday's (Madrid) game, everyone saw it and can reach their own conclusions."

After the draw with Sevilla, Pique said it would be difficult to win La Liga based on what he's seen in recent games, appearing to suggest Madrid had benefitted from refereeing decisions.

On those comments, Setien added: "On Pique, not just now, but always, he has seemed a very intelligent person to me."

On the use of VAR, the Barça coach said: "With respect to VAR, it's a tool that can improve the game. But you have to use it because it gives us a clearer vision of reality when you have to make quick decisions.

"The good thing is you can see different angles. It's understandable that we wonder why some things are revised and others aren't, in one game or another. And you could think that's it is not being used well."
